I love the angle of this photo and it really shows pretty much what we flautists have to deal with. It might have looked more dramatic if your cousin had a longer foot joint (the one you need to play C below the staff and C onward double above the staff XP) but I really like this deviation
If you want to shine your flute you can use valve oil (brass instruments' valve oil) but tarnish is really hard to get off without ruining the silver plating of the flute. Either you can get a professional to do it or it might actually have already eaten away at the silver plating and all that's left is the alloy they use to make the flute. Either way tarnish doesn't do much to your sound, it just looks a bit funky.
